Let's Feed Them All
Giovanni's Fish Market recently reached an amazing milestone of 30 years in business in beautiful Morro Bay, California. The family owned and operated company decided the best way to celebrate was to do what the business was founded upon - giving back to the local community. To celebrate and also in tribute to the late Mike DeGarimore, the family patriarch, Giovanni's Fish Market offered FREE Fish and Chips to everyone who stopped by on June 3rd. The goal of the event was to feed as many people as possible in one day and to raise awareness for hunger, a cause in which Giovanni DeGarimore [owner] feels strongly about.
Media coverage in San Luis Obispo County went viral with every single local news agency [TV, internet, newspaper, etc.] covering the story prior to the event allowing for great exposure. Social media was a hit as well with the hashtag "#LetsFeedThemAll" gaining lots of publicity. The morning of the event people were lined up down the block hours before the restaurant even opened. Guests were greeted with balloons, prizes, and "Swag Bags" full of extras and information on homelessness and hunger; even free cotton candy. Throughout the day, the very popular local band "The Mighty Croon Dogs" entertained guests out front, accompanied by a dancing Crab named "Clawz" and a dancing Sandwich who were quite the hit. Various other local musicians entertained guests eating out on the waterfront patio all day long, while raffles and giveaways took place every 30 minutes.
In the end, the event overwhelmingly exceeded expectations by feeding more than 2,000 people in just ONE day, all for FREE! On top of the thousands of fish and chips that were given away, the event also raised over $2,100 for the San Luis Obispo Food Bank. Giovanni hopes that the success of the event continues to be talked about and inspire other businesses, near and far, to do something similar to help solve the problem of hunger.
It's been a couple weeks since the big 30th anniversary celebration on June 3rd, but the positive energy and feel-good vibe of giving back is still alive and well at Giovanni's Fish Market. Locals are still talking about the big event, donations continue to come in, media coverage continues to expand and other local businesses are now pondering their own plans on how to give back next. To top all of that off, Giovanni DeGarimore was awarded a "Certificate of Recognition" from State Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian, whose personnel came to the event to present the award.
How will you be joining the cause to bring awareness to hunger?
